See you next year!
Taking place at Hall 15 of the Shenzhen World Exhibition and Convention Center, Design Dome pulled off a remarkable debut in line with its mission to connect global brands with the Chinese design industry. The four-day event featured some of the world’s leading furniture and interior design companies, artists, and designers through its exhibits and projects. Keep scrolling to see the highlights and key moments of the fair:
Over forty brands were in Design Dome’s inaugural lineup. Decades-old Italian brand Zanotta was the first booth to greet visitors at the main entrance, and right next to it was Spanish artisanal lighting brand LZF, showcasing its products in China for the first time.
Other notable first appearances were from Swedish public infrastructure company Green Furniture Concept, Italian modern contemporary brand Zamagna, and bedroom furniture brand Roomy—a collaboration between Chinese home décor company Qumei and designer Frank Chou. And for a few others, including 150-year-old Nordic design pioneer Fritz Hansen and Hong Kong-based outdoor furniture brand Livintwist, the fair provided one of the first opportunities for Southern China’s enthusiasts and would-be buyers to have hands-on interaction with their products.
Among the rest of the exhibitors were Scandinavian design brand Fredericia, Danish sustainable brand Mater, custom kitchen companies Cesar and Warendorf die Küche, Swedish home appliance company ASKO, Italian furniture manufacturer Chateau d’Ax, and design brands Edra, Imperfetto, and Qeeboo.
Keep an eye out for upcoming articles where we’ll talk about some of the brands’ booths in more detail! Meanwhile, continue scrolling for more photos and other moments you might have missed.
A big part of the venue was allocated to an array of curated collections and projects by renowned designers. Material_S, an avant-garde project curated by industrial designer Tommaso Masera and founder of Alchimia Alessandro Guerriero, was created to explore and push the boundaries of different materials. Artists and designers collaborated with some of the best materials companies, resulting in unique art pieces and innovative materials applications.
The exhibit displayed work by Masera, Guerriero, Aldo Cibic, Ben Wu, Frank Jiang, Guilio Iacchetti, Ryan LaBar, Liang Chen, Shi Tianyi, and Ye Fan; in collaboration with companies Deco Deco, Procédés Chénel, Young Lion (扬狮), DuPont™ Tyvek®, Artmen (那特), Nanshuiyi, Sunbrella®, and Livintwist.
Mario Tsai‘s DESIGNEW aims to take up-and-coming global designers to a higher level of exposure in the industry, inviting emerging talent and design companies to collaborate and create new designs based on an annual theme. Themed CORRECT-INCORRECT, the 2022 edition saw exceptional interpretations by Hoo’s x Ming Design Studio, Hoyan x Mario Tsai/Stine Aas, Coomo x Chen Wei/Panter&Tourron, Morning Sun x Chen Xingyu/Studio KAE, Landbond x Mao Jie/Zhou Anbin, Right Home x Ren Hongfei/Studio Monana, and Magister·UT x Ximi Li/Li Le/BCXSY—all displayed at the booth made of used construction materials.
WISE, also by Mario Tsai, provides a platform for exceptional aspiring designers across China. This year’s selected submissions came from Dai Hongyu, Lin Shuan, Song Chun, WILD ZOO, Yang Motong, Zhang Shiqi, and Zhang Zhongyu. As it did last year, the judging panel selected three winning designs, the best of which will participate in next year’s DESIGNEW—and the prize went to Zhang Zhongyu and her MMR Studio, presenting the Slice System.
International Design Connection (IDC) provides a space and opportunity for independent design resources to promote their work and services. This year’s participating studios included AMY, BAJIAO Design, Favaretto & Partners, HunO, Ming Design Studio, Morpha, nöin studio, Pushe Design, OUXUN, Studio KAE, studioiiid, Wellife Design Studio, Zhiguang Design, and Yingjie Design.
The Playground between People and Object, a project by Yuhsien Lin Studio, showcased three different areas resembling a playground. Companies Ultrasuede®, Rug Star, and Knights Craft provided materials and elements for each area: the maze, the swing, and the garden, offering visitors a nostalgic experience as they explored and interacted with the installations.
Design Object, Design Dome’s unique boutique space, offered original designs and innovative materials collections by independent designers and studios.
The forums, IdeaOut and Aldo Cibic’s Idea Outside, were packed throughout the fair. Companies, designers, and other professionals from various design fields spoke on trending topics and important issues in the industry, such as environmental awareness, the relationship between brands and designers, innovative materials applications, and haute couture in interior design.
The Let’s Glow Designers’ Night, held on the second day of the fair, treated guests to delicious food and wine as they enjoyed discussion panels, brand and designer presentations, and live music from Shenzhen-based duo Feardrops.
Finally, we would like to extend our gratitude to those who made Design Dome happen: Shenzhen Creative Week and the Shenzhen Furniture Association; Shenzhen World Exhibition and Convention Center; our exhibitors and participating companies, artists, and designers; invaluable partners; and all staff involved. And to Design Dome’s visitors—thank you for coming to our Hall 15, and we hope you all had a great time.
Design Dome will return in March 2023!
